Marathon Policy & Guidelines

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all intermediate to advanced pianists who have demonstrated an ability to perform a piece in its entirety with ease during our online meetups. No audition is required however, we will prioritize members who have performed in at least two of our monthly zoom meetups by February 1, 2026. Minimum age requirement is 18.  There is no age limit.

PIECE LENGTH: Limited to a maximum of 10 minutes per piece. Some flexibility in timing is allowed in case of advanced pieces that are a little over 10 minutes. (Ex; Chopin Ballades, Scherzos, etc.)

NUMBER OF PIECES: Each performer will present one piece by the same composer not exceeding 10 minutes. Whether the piece is a short 3 minute piece or a longer 10 minute piece, the focus should be on quality over quantity. A shorter piece that are played well can be more appealing to some audience members with a shorter attention span. We ask that you focus on quality and not the length of the piece is. It’s not a competition about who is playing a longer piece. In case of program shortage, we can allow performers to play more than one piece and appear twice on stage.

PIECE SELECTION CRITERIA: We will select pieces that we think are suitable for the overall program. If you wish to know if the piece selection(s) is acceptable, you can send an email to, newyorkpianogroup@yahoo.com under the subject, ‘NYPG Piano Marathon’.

PERFORMER ENTRY LIMIT: There is no entry limit per performer. Performers can apply to enter in an unlimited number of marathons. However, performers will not be allowed to register with the same piece that was performed at a previous marathon.
